Namsangol Hanok Village is a picturesque, historical park where traditional Korean houses can be found. Located at the foot of Namsan Mountain, visiting the place is one of the best free things you can do in Seoul.

The Five Restored Hanoks

Namsangol Hanok Village is a collection of five restored traditional Korean houses or what they call hanok. Hanoks were first constructed during the Joseon Dynasty.

The five hanoks in Namsangol were actually recovered from different parts of the city. The interior design of each hanok reflects its respective owners – from peasants to aristocrats.

Upon arriving at the village, it seemed like we were transported in a different time.

The hanoks were situated next to each other and one of the houses is open to the public. We did found well preserved furniture that somehow depicted the way of living in Korea in the ancient times.

Pavilion and Garden

Aside from the hanoks, a leisure walk inside Namsangol Village is truly inviting. It was a bright and cold morning when we visited that we took so much delight savoring the natural beauty of its garden.

There were lovely spots where you can just sit down and chill or read a book. Such a tranquil ambiance would really give you some time to unwind.

Time Capsule Plaza

Namsangol Hanok Village is also the site for the Seoul Millennium Time Capsule. We were just astonished when we heard about the Time Capsule.

The Time Capsule was buried at the highest point of the village in November 1994 that commemorated Seoul’s 600th Year Anniversary. It contains 600 artifacts that represent the life of the Korean citizens. The Time Capsule will be opened in November 2394. I wonder how the future generation will be fascinated with the society that came before them.

Since the village is located just at the foot of the Namsan Mountain, you can also sight N Seoul Tower from afar.
