Our Bandung day trip was really loaded with a lot of interesting activities. One of these was a visit to a kopi luwak cafe and factory named Sawarga.
Kopi luwak in Indonesia originally came from the islands of Java and Sumatra. It is made from beans that passed through the digestive tract of a civet cat or locally known as luwak. The luwaks eat berries but only the flesh of the fruit. The beans that were left intact will be expelled from their system as feces.
Sawarga Kopi Luwak Cafe and Factory
The coffee lover in me would not want to miss a visit to a kopi luwak factory. I’ve been to one in Bali and I’m happy to explore one again in Bandung, at Sawarga Kopi. Warmly receiving us, they showed us how they process kopi luwak from beginning to end.
The Process of Making Kopi Luwak
The first step in the process of making kopi luwak is the collection of the beans from the forest. We were fortunate enough that there were freshly gathered beans during our visit so we saw how the raw beans looked like as they were picked.
After collection, the beans will be washed and dried. Once dried, the beans will be peeled and then sorted. Based from its shape, the beans are classified as female and male. Kopi luwak made from male beans are more expensive.
The sorted beans will then be roasted. After roasting, it will be ready for grinding. The last step will be packaging.
How to Drink Kopi Luwak
Each one of us took a cup of kopi luwak (Rp 65,000 per cup – female bean). For best consumption, stir first your kopi luwak after brewing. You may add sugar and/or creamer depending on your preference (but it may reduce the rich flavor of the coffee). After stirring, wait one to two minutes until the dregs come down. Sip and enjoy!
Kopi Luwak Scrub Massage
A free coffee scrub comes if you purchase a cup of kopi luwak. Surely, we will not miss this chance! I really liked the coffee’s fragrant smell as the attendant applied it on my face, arms, and legs. We waited for a few minutes before we washed the coffee scrub. My skin really felt soft and smooth afterwards. As a token of our appreciation, we gave them some tip before leaving.
