Bandung’s Sulphuric Massage

Massage is one of the simple luxuries I enjoy. I didn’t expect to have one around a volcanic crater that’s why I instantly said yes to a sulphuric massage at Kawah Domas during our Bandung day trip.

Tangkuban Perahu Volcano

Tangkuban Perahu volcano, that literally means “overturned boat” because of its shape, is a semi-dormant volcano that last erupted in 2013. Three craters are connected to it and we were fortunate to visit two, one of which is Kawah Domas.

Honestly, we didn’t know what to expect when we started our Bandung day trip at Tangkuban Perahu volcano. Upon arrival at the jump-off point, we were offered face mask as protection from the smell of sulfur around the crater area (but it’s expensive at the site, better to bring one). We didn’t buy one and I can say the smell was tolerable and not bothersome for me.

A short hike was required to reach Kawah Domas and for safety purposes, a local guide was required to accompany you. Our mini trek lasted for around 30 minutes. The trail to the crater was easy. The cool temperature was also pleasant. Our local guide, who spoke good English, enthusiastically shared insights about the place. He even showed to us a 20-peso bill which was given to him by a fellow Filipino traveler some time ago (and I gave him a 10-peso coin as souvenir as well).

Sulphuric Massage

Upon reaching the crater area, we saw mini volcanic pools or hot springs. We tried soaking our feet and the hot waters seemed to comfort our tired muscles from the short hike.

After a while our guide asked us if we want to avail of the sulphuric massage. You know these are the kind of offers I wouldn’t have to think twice, lol. We actually saw some bottles of sulphuric mud being sold at the store nearby. The same sulphuric mud was applied on us during our massage. They put it in our arms and legs. We let it on for a few minutes before washing it off. Our skin really felt smoother after.

If you’re not too sensitive with the smell of sulphur and you love massage, I recommend you to try it. Just do note the smell will linger a little longer after the massage.
