Planet Grapes, Wine Without the Drama

October 11, 2015 / By / Post a Comment

Wine has always been interesting for me and I admire how Planet Grapes attempts to bring it closer to the public.

Know Inside Out

Usually, people would associate wine to things like “extravagance” and “special celebrations”. Others would even get intimidated with wine particularly when they can’t even pronounce its name. Planet Grapes has really done a good job in making wine consumption as casual as drinking your soda in can, no drama at all!

The wines at Planet Grapes represent different wine regions in the world including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, North America and South America. And guess what? They have paired it with our favorite Filipino street food, something almost all of us came across with. This definitely made wine drinking very comfortable.

On the Table

Planet Grapes in Shangri-La Plaza has intimate and cozy interiors made lovelier with its high ceiling. It can be a good dating place for couples but it’s also a nice place to hang out with your friends and have that warm conversation.

The place is also equipped with state-of-the-art Italian enomatic machines. This is like a wine vending machine or dispenser that allows guests to just sample a sip of a particular wine. Also, the machine helps preserve the wine after the bottle has been opened.

I find it really good for budding wine enthusiasts like me who would like to explore and try different glasses.

The staff of Planet Grapes is quite knowledgeable and friendly if ever you need help on what specific wine should be pair with your choice of food.

Spill the Beans

Chicharon with Tinapa Dip (PHP215)

Who does not love Chicharon? Planet Grapes actually gave it a twist by pairing it with a delicious tinapa dip that’s also a bit sour. It is best partnered with Paul Mas Sauvignon Blanc 2012.

Red Hot Bopis

They also served Red Hot Bopis. To those who do not really appreciate spicy food, their version of Bopis is not that spicy so everybody can really try it. This can be paired with Pircas Negras Malbec 2013.

Chicken Barbecue (PHP375)

With well-cooked meat, their chicken barbecue has a tasty grilled flavor and can also be paired with Pircas Negras Malbec 2013.

Organic BBQ Pork Spare Ribs (PHP725), Adobe Rice (PHP65)

And the winning dish for the night? It’s that heavenly Organic BBQ Pork Spare Ribs that is baked for two to three hours. Healthy as it is, the meat is so tender that everything will be smooth and perfect in your mouth. But that’s not the end of the story, you can also have their Adobo rice with it. Note that the Adobo rice can be eaten on its own because of its succulent flavor. Pair the amazing ribs with Folie a Deux Cabernet Sauvignon 2009.

Sweet Tooth

Buko Pie Bites (PHP140)

Yes, they have Buko Pie. I like its soft crust wrapping that sweet macapuno filling. And you’re right, they also have a wine to pair with this delectable dessert, none other than Urban Old Vines 2013 from Germany.

Turon Trilogy (PHP165)

Turon Trilogy is simply our Filipino classic “meryenda” (snack) that is Turon. Trilogy because their Turon is a combination of banana, ube and langka and is paired with Urban Old Vines 2013.

Crème Brulee Sampler (PHP180)

Crème Brule of Planet Grapes has three flavors: original, banana and durian. I like banana the most. Like the other desserts, this also gets paired with Urban Old Vines 2013.

Bottoms Up

Paul Mas Sauvignon Blanc 2012

This is a light white wine from France that has a vivid taste on the palate. With 12.5% alcohol, its citrus fruits aroma is quite stimulating. I really like its light mouthfeel.

Pircas Negras Malbec 2013

A red wine from Argentina with 12.5% alcohol, Pircas Negras Malbec 2013 consists of strong dark fruit flavors with black cherry and plum aromas. I find that smoky finish after taking a sip to be prominent.

Folie a Deux Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

With a slightly higher alcohol level of 14%, this cabernet sauvignon also have dark fruit flavors.

Urban Old Vines 2013

Coming from Germany, Urban Old Vines 2013 is semi-sweet and has that refreshing finish. It only has 9.5% alcohol. From all the wines we tried, this is the one I like most.

  • Wine paired with Filipino street food and classic merienda.
  • Wine vending machine to sample a sip or glass of wine. No need to buy the entire bottle.
  • Knowledgeable staff, they can guide you for the best food and wine pairing.

Food for Thought

Planet Grapes has really done a fabulous job in bringing wine closer to the people. Wine without the drama is a great idea to encourage everyone to simply enjoy a glass of wine.
